They call Malta a concrete jungle for a good reason. Yes, we have google maps, but in my experience, the places with good reviews are pretty standard, some of the lesser known places are either incorrectly marked or not on the map at all, the only way to know is to ask a local. Since the site administrator is Maltese, here's a list of the places the admin goes to regularly.
Note on Gozo: since Gozo gets less tourists than Malta, it's much cleaner and quieter, also the prices are lower. However, getting there requires a long bus route and ferry with a one way fare, or a very expensive ferry.
Il-Gifen snack bar [Triq San Pawl, Valletta] Local white and blue collar employees often go here for a coffee or lunch. Only cash is accepted and the price per person is 10-15 EUR.
Coffee Break [Triq Taht Putirjal, Victoria] The place is across the road from the Gozo bus terminal, so is very hard to miss. A lot of bus drivers go there on break. Their in-house ice tea is really good, and a good meal costs 10-15 EUR per person.
On-ship galley [MV GUADOS] This is where you can buy food on the Gozo Channel Line ferry. If you commute via the ferry, it is a good option. Cash only in some cases so be aware. Meals are less than 5 EUR.
Sufa Barber [Triq Taht Putirjal, Victoria] Where the admin goes to get a haircut, very convenient place next to the bus terminal. 12 EUR.
Soreda Hotel For 75EUR/night it's pretty expensive but the service and the food is very good.
Topaz Hotel Costs 33UR/night for a single person (I got a room with three beds and a massive desk twice) and with some great service. The staff are very nice there too and breakfast is served at the Emerald Restaurant, worth noting that the selection of food there is always the same but you can get a omlet if you find the chef that makes it. Staff suggest: book at least two weeks in advance if you want a balcony room and book from the Hotel's website if you want the good prices.
